Why is scaling and root planing necessary?
Periodontal Disease can become a real problem. If you experience continuous bleeding while brushing and flossing, Halitosis that mouthwash cannot cure, inflamed and red gums, or other concerning symptoms it may be time to consider a deep cleaning, otherwise known as scaling and root planing.
What to Expect
Scaling and Planing can take a single appointment or you may need to return for a second visit. At the first appointment we will begin by giving you a complete exam that includes radiographs and a full mouth x-ray and evaluation. Once we’ve assessed your needs we will schedule you for your follow-up visits to begin your scaling and root planing.
Anesthesia is the first step in the process at the follow-up visit. Once you are comfortably numb we will begin by using a scaler to remove the harmful build-up that is on your teeth. If we feel it is in your benefit to perform this procedure in separate appointments, for your comfort, we will send you home with a mouthwash that is medicated and will help the healing process between visits.
We will schedule you for a follow-up appointment approximately 3 months after all the scaling has been completed. This visit gives us a chance to assess the health of your mouth and to ensure that nothing new has developed that we would be concerned about. It is important to maintain healthy home care and we may feel it is necessary to set up subsequent 3 to 4 month follow-ups until we are comfortable that you are in a healthy dental care routine at home.
